Summary

Isabel Gibson has all but perfected the art of forgetting。 She’s a New Yorker now, with nothing left to tie her to Brinkley’s Island, Maine。 Her parents are gone, the family bookstore is all but bankrupt, and her sister, Sophie, will probably never speak to her again。
But when a mysterious letter arrives in her mailbox, Isabel feels herself drawn to the past。 After years of fighting for her independence, she dreads the thought of going back to the island。 What she finds there may forever alter her path—and change everything she thought she knew about her family, her home, and herself。

The Bookstore Sisters By Alice Hoffman。 what a sweet read 。 One that truly Makes one think, how life should be。 Who matters the most。 How Life goes by in a flash。Two sisters, close as children then Things happen。 Before they know it years Have Gone by。 Not seeing each other。 Soon a letter arrives。 To Isabel。 And everything Changes。 The books are the most important。 Oh how I enjoyed this story。 Short and sweet。 Love Short stories。 From time to time。

so much said in such a short story…Lovely, funny, endearing, honest。 I enjoyed this very much and have already recommended it to my friends that love reading as much as I do。 Thank you!

Sweet little story about sisterhood, grief, and remembering all the ways a person can belong to someone, even when they’ve been estranged from one another for years。 Not realistic in the least, but very charming。

An endearing, delightful read! In picking out my Amazon Prime’s First Reads picks for the month of October (we get two books this month 🥳), I immediately knew I wanted to read The Bookstore Sisters by Alice Hoffman。 I loved the title, the cover, and the author! I did highlight many sentences through my kindle app, but for some reason I don’t think they came through which is disappointing because I really wanted to share some awesome quotes with my book loving friends。 I highly recommend reading this short story, as it is a fast read that will leave you feeling light hearted and delighted! 。。。more

Isabel and Sophie are sisters。 When their father died, Isabel left town and Sophie was very angry about that。 Isabel is trying to forget everything about having lived in Maine, but she gets a letter in the mail from her hometown that says, “Help。” Turns out her niece, who she’d never met, sent it。 She goes home and Sophie is still mad, but she’s broken her leg。 Isabel stays to help her and starts remembering all of the things that she’d forgotten。 This was a lovely story that shows how sisters s Isabel and Sophie are sisters。 When their father died, Isabel left town and Sophie was very angry about that。 Isabel is trying to forget everything about having lived in Maine, but she gets a letter in the mail from her hometown that says, “Help。” Turns out her niece, who she’d never met, sent it。 She goes home and Sophie is still mad, but she’s broken her leg。 Isabel stays to help her and starts remembering all of the things that she’d forgotten。 This was a lovely story that shows how sisters should be。 。。。more

Free with Amazon First Reads this month。 I’ve never read any Alice Hoffman and this is a short story so I thought I’d give it a go。 It packs an awful lot into a few pages, I can’t help thinking it would be better worked up into a proper novel。

Short but beautifully sweet!I only wish Alice had popped in the recipes for the cute cakes in the book。 A perfect early Sunday morning read!

Somehow I have never read Alice Hoffman。 I have always known I would like her work so when this wsa one of the Amazon prime options this month it seemed like a good opportunity。 And I loved it。 Would have loved it to be a longer story though。

A Haunting Story of Sisters Being SistersShort stories serve a unique purpose in literature。 They are like a snapshot, a moment in time that gives the reader a glimpse of the still life between what was and what will come next。 This well-written portrait of two sisters' reactions to family events, the paths taken by each one, the consequences of their choices, gives the reader a refreshing reminder that no matter the reasons or causes for separation, life will go on。 And if we are fortunate, we A Haunting Story of Sisters Being SistersShort stories serve a unique purpose in literature。 They are like a snapshot, a moment in time that gives the reader a glimpse of the still life between what was and what will come next。 This well-written portrait of two sisters' reactions to family events, the paths taken by each one, the consequences of their choices, gives the reader a refreshing reminder that no matter the reasons or causes for separation, life will go on。 And if we are fortunate, we will be better as a result。 This is a very good story。 。。。more

A touching short story from the writer of the Practical Magic series, beautifully written, with interesting characters and a vivid sense of place。 Two estranged sisters reunite when one of them has an accident and needs help relaunching their father's neglected bookshop。 My only criticism is that I wanted it to be longer。 Beautiful。 A touching short story from the writer of the Practical Magic series, beautifully written, with interesting characters and a vivid sense of place。 Two estranged sisters reunite when one of them has an accident and needs help relaunching their father's neglected bookshop。 My only criticism is that I wanted it to be longer。 Beautiful。 。。。more

What a quick, feel good short story。 In just 36 pages (on kindle), I was able to learn who these sisters were - Isabel and Sophie, and truly connect with them! A true lesson was learned… no matter how much we try to forget, or run away, that everlasting selfless love truly binds us together。 It feels good to feel。

This was a great short story。 It was beautifully written。 This was about 2 sisters that spent years apart until one day they were brought back together。

Mailmanr5

A little too teary for my tastes。 Well written。

Started out kinda slow, but then got a lot better。 Would have liked to see more dialogue at the beginning。 But this could totally be expanded into a full length novel and turn out great!

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Really enjoyable little read and beautifully written but I think for me it would have worked better as a full book。 How did the sisters build their relationship back up? How did Isabel decide to stay? When did Violet accept Isabel? Little things that are skipped over that would have built the story up much more, it seemed really rushed especially towards the end。

Extra star for the absolutely necessary shoutout to Edward Eager。

Excellent story!A lovely story about two sisters, a bookstore and the power of love。 Although a short story, I wanted to step inside and live in it for a while longer。 Beautifully written!

A sweet storyThis was a nicely written, evocative story。 I always enjoy a happy ending。 The writing sparkled and it was easy to imagine the scenarios as the author described them。 I liked the way the author built up the narrative from forgetting to remembering though I’m not sure how believable some of the forgetfulness was。I didn’t love the way the sisters were depicted - relationships are not black and white, and I think the situations were more nuanced than the author painted them。

A touching story of 2, kind of, estranged sisters。 Will the unexpected letter change Isabel and Sophie’s lives?
